How to approach Yes or No or Not Given

Yes No Not Given works on the views and claims of the writer rather than plain facts. YES means the writer agrees with the statement. NO means the writer disagrees. NOT GIVEN means the writer never expresses that view. The trap is the same as True False Not Given: silence is never disagreement.

  1. 1Spot opinion languageLook for words that signal a view, such as believe, argue, suggest, claim, doubt. These mark where the writer position lives.
  2. 2Read the claim carefullyDecide precisely what view the statement attributes to the writer before you search the text.
  3. 3Locate the writer positionScan in passage order for the paraphrase of the claim and read the surrounding sentences for the writer stance.
  4. 4Decide Yes, No, or Not GivenYES if the writer clearly holds that view, NO if the writer clearly rejects it, NOT GIVEN if the writer expresses no opinion on it.
  5. 5Separate fact from opinionA fact stated in the passage is not the same as the writer agreeing with a claim about it. Keep the two apart.

Common mistakes to avoid

Treating Yes No Not Given like a pure fact check.
You are tracking the writer opinion, so weigh stance words, not only data.
Choosing NO when the writer simply never mentions the view.
No mention means NOT GIVEN. NO needs the writer to reject the claim.
Confusing one expert quoted in the text with the writer own view.
A view the writer reports is not always a view the writer shares. Read who is speaking.

How is Yes No Not Given different from True False Not Given?
True False Not Given deals with facts and information. Yes No Not Given deals with the views, claims and opinions of the writer. The decision process is the same, but you focus on stance words.
When should I choose Not Given?
Choose NOT GIVEN when the writer expresses no clear view on that exact claim. If you cannot find a sentence where the writer agrees or disagrees, it is NOT GIVEN.
Are the answers in order?
Yes, the questions usually follow the order of the passage, so work downward through the text.
Is this Academic Reading?
Yes, the passages are IELTS Academic. The same skill applies to General Training opinion passages.
