How to approach Multiple Choice

Multiple choice in IELTS Academic Reading asks you to pick the best answer, sometimes more than one, from a set of options. The distractors are written to look right by reusing words from the passage in a wrong context. Your job is to find the relevant section, then test each option against what the text actually means.

  1. 1Read the question stem firstUnderstand what is being asked before you read the options, so the options do not bias your search.
  2. 2Locate the relevant sectionScan for the keyword or its synonym. Multiple choice usually follows the passage order.
  3. 3Test every option against the textCheck each option for support in the passage. Reject any that is unsupported, only partly true, or true elsewhere but not here.
  4. 4Beware vocabulary trapsA distractor often repeats a word from the passage while changing the meaning. Match the idea, not the word.
  5. 5For multiple answer questions, read the instructionWhen asked to choose two or three, mark exactly that number. Too few or too many loses the mark.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing the option with the most words from the passage.
Shared words are often a trap. Pick the option whose meaning the text supports.
Selecting an option that is true in the real world but not stated here.
Only the passage counts. The answer must be supported by this text.
Picking the first option that looks reasonable.
Test all options. The best answer is the one with the strongest support, not the first plausible one.

How do I beat the distractors?
Distractors usually borrow words from the passage but twist the meaning, or state something true in a different part of the text. Test each option against the exact section the question points to.
Do multiple choice questions follow the passage order?
Single answer multiple choice usually follows the order of the passage. Multiple answer sets may draw from a wider section.
What if two options seem correct?
Re read the stem precisely. One option will match it fully while the other will be only partly true or true in the wrong place.
Is this Academic Reading?
Yes, the passages are IELTS Academic. The technique is the same for General Training multiple choice.
