How to approach Matching Information

In Matching Information you are told a piece of information and must find which paragraph contains it. Unlike most task types, the questions do not follow the order of the passage, and one paragraph may hold the answer to more than one question or none at all. The skill is fast scanning for a paraphrase of the detail.

  1. 1Understand the detail you are huntingRead each statement and identify the exact piece of information, such as a reason, an example or a definition.
  2. 2Scan, do not read in fullMove quickly through paragraphs looking for the synonym of the keyword rather than reading every word.
  3. 3Match the paraphraseThe answer paragraph reworks the statement. Confirm the meaning matches, not just a shared word.
  4. 4Remember paragraphs can repeatA paragraph may answer several questions, and some paragraphs answer none. Do not assume one match each.
  5. 5Leave the hardest for lastSettle the clear matches first, which shrinks the search area for the difficult ones.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming each paragraph is used once.
A paragraph can be the answer to more than one question, or to none.

Do Matching Information questions follow the passage order?
No. This is one of the few task types where the answers are not in order, so you must scan the whole passage for each detail.
Can one paragraph be the answer twice?
Yes. A single paragraph can contain the information for more than one question, and some paragraphs are not used at all.
How is this different from Matching Headings?
Matching Headings asks for the main idea of a paragraph. Matching Information asks where a specific detail appears, which can be a minor point inside a paragraph.
Is this Academic Reading?
Yes, the passages are IELTS Academic. The skill carries over to General Training as well.
