How to approach Sentence Completion

Sentence Completion gives you a sentence with a gap that you fill using words taken straight from the passage. The instruction sets a strict word limit, such as no more than two words. The answer is always lifted from the text, so the skill is predicting the kind of word the gap needs, then finding it.

  1. 1Read the instruction word limitNote whether you may use one, two or three words. Exceeding the limit makes a correct answer wrong.
  2. 2Predict the word typeDecide whether the gap needs a noun, verb, adjective or number. This narrows your search dramatically.
  3. 3Find the matching sectionScan for the keyword and its synonyms. The sentence paraphrases the passage, so the words around the gap will be reworded.
  4. 4Copy the answer exactlyTake the word straight from the text and spell it exactly. A misspelled answer scores zero.
  5. 5Check the sentence reads correctlyReread the completed sentence to confirm the grammar and meaning both fit.

Common mistakes to avoid

Writing more words than the limit allows.
Count the words. No more than two words means one or two, never three.
Paraphrasing the answer in your own words.
The answer must come straight from the passage. Do not change the word.
Misspelling the word you copied.
Spelling must be exact. Copy carefully from the text.

Can I change the form of the word?
No. You copy the word exactly as it appears in the passage. Changing a singular to a plural or a verb tense can make the answer wrong.
What does no more than two words mean?
It means your answer can be one word or two words, but never three. A number counts as one word, and a hyphenated word usually counts as one.
Are the answers in order?
Yes, Sentence Completion usually follows the passage order, so the next gap is filled from a later part of the text.
Is this Academic Reading?
Yes, these are IELTS Academic passages. Sentence Completion appears in both Academic and General Training.
