How to approach Matching Features

Matching Features gives you a set of statements and a list of options, such as researchers, theories or places, and asks you to match each statement to the right option. Options can be used more than once or not at all. The skill is locating each named option in the passage and reading what is said about it.

  1. 1Scan for the named optionsFind where each person, study or category appears in the passage and mark it. Names are easy to spot.
  2. 2Read what the text says about eachNote the claim, finding or feature attached to each option before you read the statements.
  3. 3Match each statement to a featureCompare each statement to the information you gathered and choose the option whose meaning fits.
  4. 4Allow reuse and gapsAn option may match several statements or none, so do not force a one to one pairing.
  5. 5Use elimination on the hard onesSettle the clear matches, then narrow the rest by ruling out options that clearly do not fit.

Common mistakes to avoid

Forcing every option to be used exactly once.
Options can repeat or go unused. Match on meaning, not on filling every slot.
Matching on a name appearing near a statement.
Proximity is not proof. Read what the passage actually attributes to that option.
Reading the statements before locating the options.
Find and annotate the options first, then the matching becomes far faster.

Work through 57 exam-style Academic questions of this type, each with a full explanation and an instant band score.

Can an option be used more than once?
Yes. In Matching Features a single option, such as one researcher, can be the answer to several statements, and some options may not be used at all.
How do I find the options quickly?
Options are usually names or labels that are easy to scan for. Mark each one in the passage first, then read what is said about it.
Do the questions follow the passage order?
Not reliably. Because options can repeat, it is safer to locate the options first rather than working strictly in order.
Is this Academic Reading?
Yes, these are IELTS Academic passages. Matching Features appears mainly in the Academic test.
