How to approach True or False or Not Given

True False Not Given checks whether a statement agrees with the information in the passage. TRUE means the text confirms the statement. FALSE means the text states the opposite. NOT GIVEN means the text neither confirms nor contradicts it. The whole skill is staying inside the passage and never using your own knowledge.

  1. 1Read the statement firstUnderstand exactly what it claims before you touch the passage. Underline the key idea, not every word.
  2. 2Find the matching lineQuestions follow the passage order, so scan forward from your last answer for the synonym of the keyword, not the exact word.
  3. 3Compare meaning, not vocabularyThe passage paraphrases the statement. Ask whether the meaning matches, contradicts, or is simply absent.
  4. 4Apply the False versus Not Given testIf the text actively says the opposite, it is FALSE. If the text is silent on that exact point, it is NOT GIVEN. Doubt usually means NOT GIVEN.
  5. 5Never bring outside knowledgeA statement can be true in real life and still be NOT GIVEN if the passage does not state it.

Common mistakes to avoid

Marking a statement FALSE because it feels wrong or is silent in the text.
FALSE needs an active contradiction in the passage. Silence is NOT GIVEN.
Using general knowledge to decide the answer.
Judge only what the passage states, even if you know better in real life.
Matching on a single repeated word and stopping there.
Read the whole sentence around the keyword, since the meaning often turns on one qualifier.

What is the difference between False and Not Given?
FALSE means the passage directly contradicts the statement. NOT GIVEN means the passage does not give enough information to confirm or contradict it. If you cannot point to a line that proves the opposite, the answer is NOT GIVEN.
Can I use my own knowledge?
No. You answer only on what the passage says. A statement can be factually true in the real world and still be NOT GIVEN if the text never states it.
Do the questions follow the order of the passage?
Yes. True False Not Given sets almost always run in passage order, so the next answer is usually below the line where you found the last one.
Is this for IELTS Academic or General Training?
This practice uses IELTS Academic passages, but the True False Not Given technique is identical for General Training.
