How to approach Summary Completion

Summary Completion gives you a short summary of part of the passage with several gaps. You either fill the gaps with words from the text or choose from a box of options. Because the summary paraphrases one section, the skill is locating that section and filling the gaps in order while staying inside the word limit.

  1. 1Read the whole summary firstGet the overall meaning before filling any gap, so each answer fits the flow.
  2. 2Predict each missing wordWork out the part of speech and likely meaning of each gap from the words around it.
  3. 3Locate the matching sectionThe summary covers one part of the passage. Find that part, then read it closely.
  4. 4Fill the gaps in orderThe summary usually follows the order of the source section, so work through it top to bottom.
  5. 5If there is a word box, watch for distractorsBoxed options include extra words that do not fit. Match grammar and meaning before you commit.

Common mistakes to avoid

Searching the whole passage for each gap.
The summary maps to one section. Find that section and stay inside it.
Ignoring grammar when choosing from a word box.
The answer must fit the sentence grammatically as well as in meaning.
Exceeding the word limit when filling from the text.
Respect the stated limit exactly, just as in Sentence Completion.

Is there always a word box?
Not always. Some Summary Completion tasks give a box of options to choose from, while others ask you to take words straight from the passage within a word limit.
How do I find the right section fast?
The summary paraphrases one continuous part of the passage. Match a distinctive keyword from the summary to the text, then read that section closely.
Do the gaps follow the order of the text?
Usually yes. The summary tends to track the order of the source section, so fill the gaps top to bottom.
Is this Academic Reading?
Yes, the passages are IELTS Academic. Summary Completion is common in the Academic test.
